CC4: climate-neutral erasure of all data carriers
“As the IT remarketer in German-speaking countries, we live our mission of using IT for longer and conserving resources. It was therefore always clear to us that the high energy requirements of IT remarketing must be generated sustainably and independently by us. Thousands of deletion processes, often lasting hours, require an enormous amount of electricity. A fact that many people are not aware of. If the reuse of used IT is to be truly sustainable, the energy used to bring the devices back onto the market must be climate-neutral. That’s what we mean by conserving resources,” explains René Rubant, CEO of CC4. “That’s why we’ve been using our own PV system on the roof of our company headquarters in Vienna 22, where all extinguishing lines and software refueling units are located, since mid-2021. This has enabled us to cover 50% of our energy requirements for the company on average. Of course, this includes the energy-intensive remarketing process for used equipment as well as the operation of our own e-fleet. Of course, this could only be an intermediate step for us and in 2023 we decided to expand the capacity of our PV system to 400 kW peak and invested a lot of money, over half a million euros. We are proud that we cover 100% of our annual energy requirements ourselves. In fact, we are on the way to producing more than our own requirements. In 2024, we expect to produce around 360 MWh. This means we will produce around 100 MWh more per year than we currently need.”
